The moment fractured when a group of soldiers entered. Gray and gold uniforms. Catriona’s spine went rigid. It was the color of her nightmares. She bent her head and reached for the wind—a spy's trick Max had taught her. She wove a tiny, targeted current of air that plucked their voices from the din and carried them only to her .
Killian saw only soldiers, his hand resting warily on the hilt of his concealed blade. He couldn't hear the poison they were speaking .
“...keyed to Poseidon’s blood,” one hissed, his voice a buzz in her ear alone. “No one but a descendant would trigger the alarm at Spiresong.”
“Doesn’t matter,” another replied. “We have eyes everywhere. The council will tell us the moment they surface, and we’ll be waiting.”
Her stomach turned to ice.
The council will tell us. The soldiers who had murdered her mother, in Council colors, were truly getting their orders from the High Council.
So much for a ‘false flag.’
